Chapter One

The phone rang twice before she answered it, and by then she already knew from the number that nothing after this moment would be the same. She stood in the kitchen doorway, the receiver in her hand, waiting for it to stop.

When it finally did she did not move, because moving meant answering, and answering meant the rest of her life.

Outside, the first snow of November was already filling the ruts in the lane. The winter room — that unused parlor her mother had kept for company that never came — held the cold the way a well holds water. She had not been in it since the funeral. The curtains were still drawn. The piano still wore its yellowed sheet of Chopin, the same page, the same crease.

She set the receiver down without lifting it to her ear. The silence that followed was not empty. It had a shape. It had her mother's shape, the particular way a house rearranges itself around an absence.

By afternoon the snow had covered the woodpile. She made tea she did not drink and sat at the table with the unopened envelope the postman had left, her name written in a hand she had not seen in eleven years.

Chapter Two

The letter was three pages and a photograph. The photograph was of a boy standing in a doorway she recognized as the winter room, except the boy was not a boy she knew, and the room was full of summer. Someone had opened the curtains. Someone had put flowers on the piano.

She read the letter twice. Then she walked into the winter room and opened the curtains herself.

Light came in the way light always had, indifferent and exact. Dust lifted. The Chopin page fluttered and settled. In the photograph the boy's hand rested on the same piano lid her mother had polished every Sunday of her childhood. The date on the back said August 1994, two years before she was born.

The letter writer signed himself as a cousin. He wrote that he had been meaning to send this for a long time. He wrote that there were things her mother had never said, and that some of them were not unkind.

She stood in the winter room until the light shifted and the photograph on the table no longer looked like evidence. It looked like a door.

Chapter Three

The cousin arrived on a Thursday with a cardboard box and a limp. He was older than the letter had led her to expect, and kinder. He would not come further than the kitchen. He set the box on the table and took off his cap as if the house required it.

Inside the box: a bundle of letters tied with grocer's twine, a silver teaspoon engraved with a letter that was not any of theirs, and a diary whose first page was written in a language she could not read.

"Your grandmother's," he said. "From before the crossing. Your mother kept it in the piano bench. I thought you should have it before the house decided otherwise."

She asked him to stay for soup. He said he could not, and then he did. They ate without talking much. Snow ticked against the window. When he left he put his cap on in the doorway and said, "She was proud of you in a way that did not know how to arrive."

After the taillights disappeared down the lane she sat with the diary and the unreadable first page and understood that some inheritances are not meant to be translated all at once.

Chapter Four

Spring came late. She had the piano tuned. She learned, slowly, that the winter room could hold more than winter. Neighbors began to knock. A woman from town asked if she might practice scales on Tuesdays. A boy who looked nothing like the photograph brought her eggs from his mother's hens.

She wrote back to the cousin. She did not tell him everything. She told him the curtains were open, and that the Chopin page had been replaced with something she could actually play.

On the first warm evening she sat in the winter room with the windows up and the diary in her lap, sounding out a word at a time, as if the house itself were teaching her a language it had been keeping for her.
